This time of year, many of us think of Santa as busy elf in his workshop in the North Pole. He may live at the North Pole now, but his true birthplace was Gemiler island on the western coast of Turkey. Visitors to the modern-day coastal town of Demre, can go inside the cave church where the original St. Nicolas, the Bishop of Myra, lived and preached. </div>

It is a relatively easy drive using a GPS. Along the drive to the canyon, the green farm fields are a refreshing sight, especially when you're used to the dry Adana area. The contrast of the green lush landscape and higher elevation makes this day trip feel like a lovely Sunday drive in the country. The bridge is known locally as "the German Bridge" because it was designed and constructed by Imperial German engineers as part of the Baghdad Railway in 1903. Recently, the bridge appeared in the movie Skyfall, lending it the moniker, the "James Bond" Bridge.<br>

Alahan monastery, clinging to the mountainside, has been deserted for some 1,400 years yet time has left it remarkably untouched. The site was explored in the 1950s and 1960s by the late Michael Gough of St. Michael’s College, Toronto, but his work was cut short by his death. So, the mystery of Alahan remains unsolved: Who were the monks who built this monastery and why did they desert it? There is no clear answer, but the attempt to find a solution takes us back to Byzantine Christianity in the centuries before the eastern provinces were lost to Islamic invasions.</div>

“The Caves of Heaven and Hell (Cennet ve Cehennem), near Kizkalesi are worth a visit as natural phenomena, and also as historical points of interest,” writes Tom Brosnahan, of the Turkey Travel Planner website. “As you approach the caves along the access road from the Mediterranean coastal highway, you’ll see the lofty walls of a huge Temple of Zeus erected here in homage to the king of the gods who features prominently in the ancient myths related to the caves.” -</div>

“Ihlara Valley, is a 14 kilometer long canyon with a depth of approximately 100 meters is strewn with about one hundred churches and believed to have once been home to about eighty thousand people. There are 4 entrances to Ihlara valley. The first one is at the start of the valley in Ihlara Village. The second one opens to the 4th kilometer of the valley and it is the most popular entrance. It has more than 300 steps down to the valley. The third entrance is Belisirma village which allows you to enter the valley by driving. It is located at the 7th kilometer, and has restaurants by Melendiz River to have lunch. Most of the guided tours end their walking here after lunch. The last entrance is the end of the valley at the Selime Monastery. The best part of the valley is the first 7 kilometers from Ihlara Village until Belisirma Village where you can see most of the churches and natural beauty. </div>

“One of Turkey’s World Heritage sites, the Göreme Open Air Museum is an essential stop on any Cappadocian itinerary and deserves a two-hour visit.” says the <i><a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/turkey/cappadocia-kapadokya/goreme/sights/museum/goreme-open-air#ixzz1mntUIYhv">Lonely Planet</a> </i>website. The open air museum is a collection of cave churches carved out by early Christians in the first century B.C. Bring a flash light as it is often dark inside. Photos are not allowed inside the church caves. Depending on the crowds, two hours may not be enough time to see all the churches.</div>

St. Thecla is an early Christian saint and a disciple of St. Paul. Persecuted for her beliefs by the Romans, she sought shelter in a cave in Silifke. Above the cave where she hid, the Byzantines built a church dedicated to her called Ayatekla, that is now in ruins. The cave beneath remains and is a place of pilgrimage for Christians.<br>

The city of Misis, once known as Mopsuestia, was one of the main stops on the Silk Road and a place of settlement from the time of the Hittites right through the Ottoman period. At the one-story Misis Mozaik Museum you can see a mosaic of Noah’s Ark along with a sampling of other ruins from the Roman, Hittite, and Ottoman civilizations that dwelled in Turkey. The city also has a Roman bridge and a small castle. The directions are easy: Head east on D-400 for about 15 minutes until you see a brown sign. Turn right. Stay on that road about another 15-20 minutes until you see the museum on your left.<br>

Dress warm for a day of fun in the mountains. We suggest you dress in layers so you can add warmer clothes while on the bus, as there are no changing facilities on the mountain. Our drivers take you there, inflate the snow tubes and then you're off for some fun in the snow. The open field where we snow tube does not have any bathrooms or restaurants. We will make a restroom stop about 15 minutes prior to arriving at the field and then again on the way back.</div>
<div class="p1">

<div class="p1">
The field is on a hill which is an easy climb to the top where you will slide down. You may also want to bring extra dry shoes, socks, and pants because you will get wet from the snow tubing. If you want to leave early, just let the driver know - Outdoor Rec trips are flexible. You may want to bring additional snacks and drinks with you as there is nowhere on the hill to purchase these items. We'll build a campfire so you can warm up between treks up the hill and there's lunch of a hot dog with soda. </div>
